When researching Twilight facts I found this list behind the character names. I wonder if Stephenie did her research or if it just happened. Here is what Twilighter.org had to say.

**Edward: Means “rich guard”. (so true!)
**Isabella a.k.a. Bella: Meaning “my God is abundance”. Isabella of France married Edward II. (WOAH!)
**Jacob: Meaning “holder of the heel” or “supplanter”. (Take what you can from that…)
**Jasper: Means “treasurer” in Persian.
**Rosalie: Means “Rose” (Obviously… How about, “beautiful rose?”)
**Alice: Composed of the elements adal “noble” and heid “kind, sort, type”. (interesting)
**Emmett: Meaning “whole” or “universal”. (Hmmm…)
**Carlise: Meaning, “Strong as Lugh”, Lugh was a Celtic god of the sun and craftsmanship. Also known as “the shing one.” (So, he’s as strong as “The shining one”? Interesting relation to vampires!)
**Esme: Means “esteemed” or “loved” in Old French. (awww)
**Charlie: Meaning, “Man, army, or warrior.” (hmmm….)
**Leah: Meaning, “Weary” or “Mistress or ruler.” (Fits her well.)
